Abstract :
Purpose - Owing to its complexity, sustainable development (SD) cannot be simply integrated as a supplementary course within the engineer’s curricula. The first aim of this paper is to focus on how to reflect pedagogically this complexity. After dealing with these questions, the paper aims to present a tool that can evaluate the student’s understanding of SD concepts.
Design/methodology/approach - A method of analysis of a student’s sustainability’s comprehension, based on (...)

The French authorities are pleased with the starting today of the first world installation of CO2 capture on top of a power station, within the framework of the European project CASTOR. Here, in Esbjerg, in this coal power plant, the demonstration is made that there is a very strong link between the CO2 Capture & Storage and the future of coal.
The use of coal and lignite is indeed at a crossroads.
On one side, coal supplied 24.4% of total primary energy supply and is used to produce (...)

Abstract
The Environmental Kuznets Curves (EKC) hypothesis suggests that the environmental impacts of a population increase in the early stages of its development, and decline once a certain level of income is attained. After examining different criticisms that can be addressed to studies that validate this hypothesis (environmental data which concern mostly restricted and/or local phenomenon, development indicators which offer a too limited vision of human development), this paper (...)

Political commitment
In his speech at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002, the President of France, M. Jacques Chirac, made a commitment that France would be prepared to submit its National Strategy for Sustainable Development to be ‘peer reviewed’ by other countries, following the proposal by the European Union to develop such a system in order to promote the sharing of experience.
Project
As a follow up, a project was initiated in 2004 by the French Ministère de (...)

Sustainable Development

There is a dizzying gulf between the need to reduce global emissions of greenhouse gases by 50% and the galloping economic development set in motion by economic globalization.
Scientists are very pessimistic about the future, but accepting their doomsday scenarios is likely only to turn public attention away from the search for solutions, as well as to isolate the Cassandras. The image of the « Titanic syndrome », used by Nicolas Hulot as the title of his recent book, springs to mind.
So what (...)

France was surprisingly absent from United Nations’ Sustainable Development Commission (SDC) on tourism in 1999. The French Minister in charge of Tourism could have defended the most valorisable features for sustainable development such as cultural tourism, green tourism, coastal conservatories... The Session was most probably considered to be a purely environmental affair. In 2000, the SDC deals with agriculture and the integrated management of land. For the moment, (...)

From rationality to governance : the decision process of sustainable development

Abstract : Many of the challenges for sustainable development involve issues and triggering mechanisms that are global, long term and complex. Yet solutions need to be, for a large part, concrete, simple, short term and local. The purpose of Local Agenda 21 is to build local capacity and private-public-citizen partnerships for action on sustainability. This can be seen, on the one hand, through the development of sustainability indicators appropriate at different scales and, on the other (...)
